Fleshy Structures Associated with Ovule Protection and Seed Dispersal in Gymnosperms: A Systematic and Evolutionary Overview

نویسندگان

چکیده

Fleshy structures associated with the ovule/seed arose independently several times during gymnosperm evolution. are linked to protection and dispersal, present in all four lineages of extant gymnosperms. The ontogenetic origin fleshy could be different, spans from ovule funiculus Taxus baccata aril, integument Ginkgo biloba, modified bracts as case Ephedra species. This variability ontogeny is reflected morphology characteristics that these tissues display among different review aims provide a complete overview ovule/seed-associated living gymnosperms, reporting detailed descriptions for every genus. evolution evolved still unclear, hypotheses have been presented—protection seeds, desiccation—each plausible but no one able account their independent origins. Our purpose offer an extensive discussion on structures, under points view (morphology, evolution, gene involvement), stimulate further studies both ecological molecular levels.

Seed dispersal of fleshy-fruited environmental weeds in New Zealand

Fruit-eating animals play a key role in spreading non-native environmental weeds, via seed ingestion and subsequent dispersal. We reviewed available information on dispersal of fleshy-fruited environmental weeds in New Zealand. We found almost a third (32.9%) of 295 environmental weed species in New Zealand have fleshy fruits adapted for internal dispersal by animals. Fruiting phenology differs...

a comparison of teachers and supervisors, with respect to teacher efficacy and reflection

supervisors play an undeniable role in training teachers, before starting their professional experience by preparing them, at the initial years of their teaching by checking their work within the proper framework, and later on during their teaching by assessing their progress. but surprisingly, exploring their attributes, professional demands, and qualifications has remained a neglected theme i...

Gymnosperm B-sister genes may be involved in ovule/seed development and, in some species, in the growth of fleshy fruit-like structures.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The evolution of seeds together with the mechanisms related to their dispersal into the environment represented a turning point in the evolution of plants. Seeds are produced by gymnosperms and angiosperms but only the latter have an ovary to be transformed into a fruit. Yet some gymnosperms produce fleshy structures attractive to animals, thus behaving like fruits from a fu...
